Treatment for Adolescents With Anxiety Disorders

Adolescent Suicide Risk Factors, Warning Signs and Protective Factors

Anxiety is a prevalent mental health disorder, affecting 4.4% of 10-14 year olds and 5.5% of 15-19 year olds. It can be challenging for adolescents to manage their feelings and behaviors on their own, especially when everything feels so overwhelming.

Hillside® offers intensive anxiety treatment programs for children, teens and adolescents experiencing panic disorders or excessive worry. We are here to provide personalized treatment and coping strategies to make life a little easier.

Treating Teen Anxiety at Hillside®

Teens often face new challenges between school and their personal lives. As a result, they may begin to experience anxiety symptoms, including feelings of restlessness, irritability, fatigue, muscle tension, sleep problems, headaches and stomachaches.

While anxiety can be a normal emotion, excessive worry can build up over time and impact daily functioning. At Hillside®, we offer the following programs to treat teen anxiety and help individuals get back to their favorite activities.

Residential Treatment for Anxiety

The residential program at Hillside® is designed for females ages 11 to 17 and males ages 13 to 17, offering stability in a 24/7 supervised and structured environment. Specifically, our residential anxiety treatment center will offer the following treatment approaches and modalities:

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT is a unique form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help teens reduce their emotional extremes. Our licensed therapists will work to help our clients increase their ability to tolerate distress with skills, including grounding and coping skills to use when they feel rising emotions.
  • Psychiatric medication management: Many anxiety medications exist to help teens regulate their nervous system. During residential treatment, we can safely introduce or adjust dosages of a medication and monitor the side effects, assisting teens in finding an option that works for them.
  • Individual DBT therapy: Your teen will have the opportunity to learn personalized solutions to identify and address unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors though the use of a behavior chain analysis and other structured tools specific to DBT.
  • Experiential Clinical Groups and Skills Training: Difficulties in managing one's emotions and behaviors can stem from skill deficits. We offer didactic and experiential groups to help our clients learn new ways to cope and offer opportunities for them to practice these skills in their daily lives.

Outpatient Anxiety Treatment

Hillside® also a partial hospitalization program option, allowing teens to engage in treatment while maintaining in the home with family.

  • Experience DBT day treatment: Our Experience DBT program is a 30-day partial hospitalization option for teens ages 13-17. During the day, our professionals will guide clients through DBT and Social Emotional Ethical Learning (SEE Learning) to develop new skills and coping strategies for anxiety.

Child Anxiety Treatment at Home

Virtual intensive outpatient program (VIOP): The VIOP offers mental health treatment for teens through a HIPAA-compliant Zoom platform. Teens (ages 12-17) and their families can stay in the comfort of their own homes and academic environments while undergoing treatment sessions.

Younger children experiencing anxiety may not be able to fully understand or express what they are feeling. Instead, they may have trouble sleeping, show extreme irritability or aggression or experience frequent nightmares.

Hillside® understands that young people need individualized care at different developmental stages. We can tailor our treatment to meet the needs of elementary age children to college age young adults. Our professionals can come to your home through our intensive in-home program to encourage a supportive environment. Serving clients ages 6 to 24, this personalized program includes:

  • Effective treatment strategies: Our care team will offer therapeutic interventions to help clients manage their feelings and behaviors in the real world. Some strategies we implement include Theraplay® and DBT.
  • Parental involvement: We encourage parents to be a part of the treatment process, especially in therapy sessions. Parents will have 24/7 access to their child's therapist for a crisis or coaching.
  • Flexible scheduling: Hillside® has flexible scheduling for our at-home care, usually scheduling two two-hour sessions per week over three months. We will work with you to determine a regular schedule that works for your family.
